Pinus sabiniana
- Tree
Tall tree center. Pinus monophylla monophylla right and left of Pinus sabiniana. Juniperus californica; left. Near Walker Pass, Kern County.
This is probably the only area where these widely separated pines grow together. Pinus sabiniana is found in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada and Pinus monophylla on the dry eastern side. These two come together only on the southern end of the Sierra, where the mountains are low enough for species from both sides of the mountains to cross over to the other side.

Pinus contorta contorta
- Tree
Growing along Mendocino Coast. This subspecies disappears a little south of Oregon, then reappears on the Mendocino Coast. Several other conifers follow the same pattern such as Tsuga heterophylla and Picea sitchensis. The trees are multi-trunked, where as Pinus contorta ssp. murrayana, of the Sierra Nevada is single trunked and straight. April 2002.

Tree on left : Pinus ponderosa.
Several very large Pinus jeffreyi can be seen next to large Pinus ponderosa south of Camp Richardson on Highway 89, at Lake Tahoe. Interesting comparisons of the bark of old growth trees for these species can be made in this area.
