This is likely the only place where this species can be seen by a paved road. There is a nice grove south of the pass, a few miles south of the California border. The western end of the Siskiyou Mts. where this highway crosses is the wettest part of California, receiving about 120 inches of precipitation on average each year. A great variety of conifers can be seen in the area growing at very
low elevations. Abies magnifica shastensis grows down to 4,500 feet. Tsuga mertensiana can also be found in some areas growing as low as 4,500 feet. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana can be observed along the byway, especially on the Oregon side of the pass. Cupressus nootkatensis is growing within a few miles of the highway on Little Greyback Mountain. This is one of the southern most locatons for that species.
