The Mammoth Lakes area has an abundance of conifer trees such as Tsuga mertensiana, Pinus monticola and Abies magnifica which are normally uncommon east of the Sierra crest. The local topography gives the area an abundance of moisture, making posible the only Ski Resort east of the Sierra crest, south of the Lake Tahoe area. Areas to the immediate north and south are much drier. On the west side of the Sierra Nevada, adjacent to the Mammoth Lakes area is the deep and wide canyon of the San Juaquin River. The canyon flows towards the southwest, the same direction as the prevailing winds during the winter wet season allowing moisture to be forced up the canyon. The head of the canyon, unlike other canyons such as Yosemite Valley, is a relatively low point in the Sierra Nevada crest. To the north and south, the High Sierra's are also much wider. All of this allows moisture to pass over the Sierra crest directly over the Mammoth Lakes area, creating a thick conifer forest that extends well into the dry desert area east of the Sierra Nevada.
