Tsuga heterophylla
SHOOT : Reddish brown above, creamy-white beneath, ribbed; dense curly, long pale brown pubescence; second year dull brownish grey.
LEAVES : In two sets, short nearly upright, 0.5 cm, above the shoot; long 1.5-1.8 cm x 0.2 cm, flat pectinate each side of the shoot; parallel-sided to a blunt apex, pale green when fresh, soon blackish-green; two broad blue-white bands beneath almost obscuring midrib; very narrow green margins.

SHOOT : Pale brown or cream, with a dense curly, pale orange pubescence. Second year dark grey or grey-brown.
LEAVES : Pectinate and slightly depressed beneath; above over the shoot and forwards, mid line leaves showing white undersides; froadest at base, tapering slightly to rounded tip. Underside with broad green margins, two white bands and a green midrib which a lens shows to be white centred with a narrow green line each side. Crushed foliage has a sweet lemony scent.

SHOOT : Shining, glabrous pale buff; pulvini orange-red; second year shoot dull brown.
LEAVES : Irregularly spreading below shoot; of varied length and pectinate above, 0.7-2 cm long x 2 mm broad, less regularly arranged but often more dense than T. diversifolia, shining dark green and grooved above, rounded and notched at the apex; two broad white bands beneath, less bright than in T. diversifolia and sometimes pale.

SHOOT : Orange beneath with fine erect pubescence visible with a lens; second year dull brown.
LEAVES : Pectinate below, tips slightly curved down, very regular and closely set one side-shoots, oblong with broad rounded and notched tip, 1 x 0.2 cm, deep glossy green above; two broad bright white bands beneath with green midrib and margins clearly defined.
