Large tree growing along Highway 20, five miles east of Fort Bragg, Mendocino County.

These dwarf trees, growing in extreemly acidic soil almost devoid of nutrients are estimated to be over 100 years old. Normal sized trees growing close by in good soil can be seen in the distance. Cupressus pygmaea grows with an amazing variety of conifers at Jug Handle State Park. The 4 mile trail, starting at the Pacific Coast, climbes gently through stands of Picea sitchensis, Abies grandis, and Pinus contorta contorta near the Coast. Sequoia sempervirens, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus muricata, and occational Tsuga heterophylla are seen along the trail futher from the coast growing with Cupressus goveniana goveniana. On the Mendocino White Plains, where the Pygmy Forest occurs, Cupressus pygmaea is growing with Pinus contorta ssp. bolanderi and Pinus muricata.
